Boot Camp Essays
Boot Camp Essays Boot Camp Essay Boot Camp Essay I am going to write about the pros and cons of boot camp. Are boot camps worth it? Will boot camps benefit him or her and the parents? Will the child come out different from what they came as. Boot camps started to pop up in the 1990s and started to become very popular throughout the United States. Boot camps were believed to reduce the number of repeat offenders and to lower operational costs. This type of rehab system is like an aftercare activities are thought to bring ongoing changes in inmates behavior.Boot camps are strongly supported by politicians and the public. Some research suggest that boot camp prisons are ineffective in reducing future inmates from committing crimes. Researchers found that some participants reported some positive changes in their behavior they also had better problem solving skills and coping skills. The positive changes did not lead to reduce recidivism. Some of the boot camps that did produce lower recidivism rates offered more treatment services, had longer sessions and had more intense post release supervision.Under a only a small portion of boot camps really see any results in prison population and correctional costs. What are the three biggest reason why prison boot camps fails to reach the goals that the prison population and recidivism fail to reach? First one of the reasons why boot camps fail, is because they fail to reduce the prison population through early volunteering for these types of boot camps are unnecessary. Lack of standards for the boot camp model. The last one is insufficient focus on offenders reentry into the community. What are boot camps? Boot camps are in prison or juvenile programs that usually target the youth. Boot camps resemble military basic training, that are used to train solders in the military. While in boot camp he or she goes through strenuous physical training, drill, ceremony and manual labor to keep the person busy most of the time while in boot camp. Most of the time the correctional offi cers act as drill instructors like they do in the military. The instructors will break you down mentally and physically.Instructors do this because they want to see every individual make a positive change in their lives, while they still have a chance. Statically speaking there are 75 state operated boot camps for adults. State and local agencies operate 30 juvenile boot camps. The larger counties operate 18 boot camps in local jails. The early boot camps usually the ones that started to just pop up just focused on military discipline, hard labor. Boot camps that are here today are more of a rehab facility that offers half of what the last sentence has and the other half being rehabbing the individuals mind, body and social skills.Other boots camps also had post release supervision such as house arrest and urine test basically a person that is on probation. Are females allowed in boot camps? Yes. females are allowed in boot camps but the women are not doing very hard labor like the men would do. The women usually mop floors clean bathrooms, women cant do hard labor because it will mess up there body. The girls do more rehab programs and awareness programs they still get discipline and order and ceremony but theyre not doing very intense labor.

Midterm Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Midterm - Term Paper Example However, as time went by, the rifles become widely recognized, and now citizens all through the United States can own one just by filling out a permit form. This has seen the crime level all over the United States increase more than any other nation out there (Alpers, 2012). This paper will draft a law to the House of Representatives in an effort to restrict the American law regarding the possession of these assault type rifles. Policy Prohibition against Importing Importing assault type rifles should strictly be a governmental task or if a permitted party wants to import an assault type rifle into the United States, it should be done with the knowledge of the government. Any coming in rifle, whether through the boarder, port or airport terminal, should be checked to clarify whether the government has allowed the importation of the firearm (Strassel, 2013). Also, in order to ease the importation of these firearms, it essential that the government imposes extremely huge taxes on the p eople importing the assault type rifles. People import these weapons from other nations because of the cheap cost of assembling them abroad, as well as the affordable taxes imposed on them during importation (Jones, 2013). Ownership Specified parties should also be the only groups allowed to possess assault type rifles. It is essential for people to note that guns are meant to kill people (Simmons, 2002). Therefore, ownership of assault type rifles should strictly be left to bodies, which seek to protect the citizens of American such as the police force (Strassel, 2013). Regular citizens who want to possess assault type rifles should have extremely strong reasons as to why they want to possess the weapons. For instance, if they notice an impending danger, they should be allowed to possess an assault type rifle only for a short while till the danger capsizes. Transportation Transposition of assault type rifles should be done with strict consent of the government. If it is possible, a law officer should be present whenever there is mass transportation of these assault type rifles (Jones, 2013). Also, in order to avoid any tension or theft during the transportation of the rifles, it is essential to transport the weapons through vehicles that are not recognized by ordinary citizens. Some might attempt to steal them during the transportation. Huge taxes should also be imposed on the transportation of these assault type rifles, and the transportation should be done during the day. The destination of the weapons should be known by the government before the transportation is done (Jones, 2013). Use of Assault Type Rifles Capable Of Firing in Semi-Automatic or Automatic Modes Use of assault type rifles capable of firing in semi-automatic or automatic modes should be permitted to people who have undergone certified training on how to fire a weapon (Malcolm, 2012). This is to avoid any stray shots in case a situation arises where a person with a permit is forced to use t he assault rifle in public. An assault type rifle, which is capable of firing semi-automatic or automatic modes, should also be made more expensive than normal assault rifles that fire only a single shot. In this way, people will shy away from purchasing this rifle and settle on the less ordinary assault type rifle. Only wealthy people can afford the above extremely expensive assault rifle that can easily be tracked by the government (Malcolm, 2012). Rationale or Purpose It is positively true that

Medical Ethics and Informed Consent Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Medical Ethics and Informed Consent - Assignment Example Researchers argued that the experimentation was to help develop an immunization for hepatitis B. The ethical challenges at hand are that yes, it is evident that research needed to be done on hepatitis at that time. However, children with mental retardation already have problems enough in their lives. This is like saying that their life has no value. In some cases, the parents did not consent. Depending on the level of mental retardation, a child can thrive but to deliberately expose them to hepatitis could greatly diminish their already lowered quality of life and the children have no say in it. They are the ones to go through the pain and struggle but instead were treated as though they were already discarded bodies. For the parents that may have consented to this experiment, they were subjecting their children to something that the effects were unknown. During a type of experiment like this, it is questionable as to what informed consent even is because what are the minimum standar ds for subjecting a personââ¬â¢s life to something that could be fatal for the sake of the medical industry? It could almost be envisioned as child abuse. Neither the researchers nor the publishing journals were responsible in making their decision to infect these children. It could be argued whether or not the publication of these editorials was ethical as well. The information about the research was disclosed that the children were at a particular school and that is an issue of confidentiality. Additionally, it was an experiment conducted on human beings. No one was to know the outcome. To publish the editorials was almost an intent to show that there was controversy in the medical field and to create a media inspired uproar. Abigail Alliance vs. FDA Majority Opinion Abigail was a terminally ill patient with cancer whom had undergone chemotherapy and radiation. She also had possible access to experimental drugs that her oncologist was suggesting. Though she could have possibly had positive effects and saved her life, the drug was only available for clinical trials. By the time that she was allowed to be entered into the clinical trial program, she was too ill to make the trip to see if the drugs would work on her and she died a couple of weeks later. The Abigail Alliance was created to help expand the availability for drugs that are only available for clinical trials to also be available to patients that are terminally ill. These drugs not only could have been helpful for Abigail but for many other patients just like her that were minimally competent and would have had the ability to make the decision for themselves had the FDA not stood in their way of obtaining these drugs. The FDA, though it makes regulations about drugs in the United States, has to conduct research on these pharmaceuticals to test to ensure that they are safe. For someone that is terminally ill, it could be a method of helping to create a better quality of life or even improve their l ongevity. These patients were not given the right to access treatment but the FDA looks at it from the perspective of being a liability if their organization allows just anyone to take these drugs

Juliet is the Better Lover Essay Example for Free
Juliet is the Better Lover Essay Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeareââ¬â¢s greatest love story. With all the characters mixed up in love, hate, war and friendship, the bardââ¬â¢s tale spearheads a current debate on whether Romeo or Juliet was the better lover. This paper attempts to prove why Juliet is by far the better lover compared to Romeo. Experts have reason to believe that Romeo and Juliet were actually juveniles. Romeo was fourteen and Juliet was thirteen. This was evident in Elizabethan royalties where sons and daughters of the rich found themselves pre-arranged to sons and daughter of the same class. Girls were allowed to marry as young as 12. Between Romeo and Juliet, Juliet sacrificed more because she had to pursue her love to Romeo given the fact that she was a girl and was the younger of lover. Being a woman, much less a girl during the Elizabethan times meant following very strict rules. Breaking of these rules meant dishonor, disgrace and punishment from her parents. Although the Romeo deserves the same fate from his parents, the gender difference makes all the difference. ââ¬Å"Elizabethan Women were totally dominated by the male members of their family. They were expected to instantly obey not only their father but also their brothers and any other male members of the family. The punishment for disobey was the whipping stool the Elizabethan girls were beaten into submission and disobedience was seen as a crime against their religion. â⬠(2005) Of the many definitions of love, Scott Peck describes it in his book The Road Less Traveled as; ââ¬Å"The will to extend oneââ¬â¢s self for the purpose of nurturing oneââ¬â¢s own or anotherââ¬â¢s spiritual growth. â⬠(Peck, 1978) In this definition between Juliet and Romeo, it is Juliet who has extended herself. Trusting her life to the poison of the priest, she totally follows the plan hoping that through her sacrifice, Romeo and herself can live happily ever after. During those times when total faith is expected and practiced in society, the belief in earthly concoctions is almost equal to belief in witchesââ¬â¢ ways. But because of her love for Romeo, Juliet allows her heartbeat to stop for three days choosing a life with her Romeo than a well-off life with her parents and Paris. Compared to the sacrifice of Romeo and Juliet, it is Julietââ¬â¢s sacrifice that can be considered weighty because she became consistent with her selflessness for her lover. Romeo couldnââ¬â¢t sacrifice his vengeance for his friend who was killed by Julietââ¬â¢s cousin which made the turns in the story. If love is self-sacrifice then Romeo is a better lover because he killed himself for the love of Juliet but love is not self-sacrifice per se. Love is the act of expanding oneself so that one could evolve from something to something better. To note, Juliet died twice for her Romeo. The first time was when she drank the poison and the second time was when she stabbed herself. So in the matter of the number of times the lovers tried to kill themselves for the love of the lover, it is still Juliet that outnumbered Romeo. She not only outnumbered Romeo in the time she killed herself but in the ways she did it. Romeo only used the poison once but Juliet used the poison and used the dagger to lead her to bleed to death upon her realization that her Romeo was dead. Juliet is the better lover because she was the first one who had to endure a loverââ¬â¢s loss. When Romeo was banished, she grieved for her Romeo more than for her cousin. If Romeo did not instantly grieve the death of his friend, maybe Julietââ¬â¢s cousin would still be alive, but then again the greatest love story would not have been told. Romeo grieved for Juliet only upon knowing of her death, which made very dramatic and weighty due to his committing suicide. However, the drama did not climax at the end of his suicide but it further gained heights when Juliet took the dagger and impaled it into her chest. ââ¬Å"Suicide is not something that happens for a simple reason. It is impossible to rap up in a nutshell the many reasons a person may want to die. The reasons for suicide range from critical injury and fatal illness to momentary sadness or a sudden and emotionally jarring shock. Some reasons may seem logical (if you are in pain and dying anyway, why prolong the suffering? ) while others seem ridiculous (a crush dumped on you in front of friends and you feel humiliated) but whatever the reason, to the person thinking of suicide, they are unbearable. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of suicides are the result of a complex combination of circumstances, emotions and a psyche in turmoil. â⬠(Hardcastle, 2007) For Juliet, it was definitely a combination of perplexities during that very moment. But surely among them, she had the option of just continuing her life free of anything and everything. She could start anew because she was dead to her parents and families anyway. However, since she was also young and in shock about the death of her Romeo, the dagger was a quick solution to make her be eternally together with Romeo. Juliet definitely chose love. Physiologically, Juliet is more capable of being the better lover. At fourteen, boys will be boys as could be proven by the rage Romeo had when his enemy killed his friend. The clouding of the mind, never mind if he was about to kill his brideââ¬â¢s cousin but the rage of testosterone controlled Romeo. There are physiological differences between girls and boys that would prove their capability of experiencing true and mature love, as explained by Dr. Gurian, 1999. 1. Adolescent boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed as emotionally disturbed than adolescent girls. Given this, Romeo most likely had decided to kill himself but that decision may have been influenced with disturbed thoughts. 2. Adolescent males are four times as likely to commit suicide as adolescent females. Given this data, the suicide of Romeo would not count so much as Julietââ¬â¢s suicide due to gender difference. 3. Adolescent males are routinely found to channel other primary feelings; hurt, pain, grief, into anger. Given this, there would be a possibility for Romeo to have committed suicide due to anger at the whole world than due to love for Juliet. 4. Adolescent boys are 15 times as likely as adolescent females to be victims of violent crime. Adolescent boys commit violent crime at a higher rate than adult offenders. Given this data, the suicide of Romeo does not count more in intensity than Juliet in terms of the violence confronting the adolescents. The shock, fear, courage and other emotions of putting the dagger towards her heart has more weight due to the gender difference. 5. Millions of adolescent boys experience post-traumatic stress due to family, cultural, and socio-economic situations. A post-traumatic boy is ten times more likely than his female peer to act out in a way that is dangerous to another person. Proving who the better lover is most difficult but like in any debate, the definitions must be stated clearly. For this paper, love has been defined as the act of self-sacrifice in the most mature circumstances. Love is an act where a person would consistently show in her actions and decisions that she is bound to another because she wishes the other person expansion of himself with her along with him. The sacrifice of Juliet comes early on in the play as can be taken from the excerpt; ââ¬Å"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name, or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and Iââ¬â¢ll no longer be a Capulet. â⬠The line illustrates that Juliet will decide not to be Capulet if Romeo do not relinquish his name. This decision also illustrates how Juliet was ready to sacrifice her whole identity just for the sake of her lover. Maybe, for Romeo to become the better lover, he should have been more mature than Juliet. Meantime, the bardââ¬â¢s tale is a unique example of truly big womenââ¬â¢s capacity to love is. Is America Still The Greatest Nation Politics Essay
Is America Still The Greatest Nation Politics Essay The United States is unquestionably the strongest military and economic power in the world today, but other great empires have crumbled and America will suffer the same fate if even its own citizens and its friends around the world ever lose faith that America acts in the name of liberty, for the sake of democracy. What does this statement mean? The author of this statement was trying to express that no matter how great a nation is, if the citizens of the nation and other nations began to lose faith, then the nation could eventually fail as others have in the past. No matter what the nations moral or ethical makeup is, without individuals willing to stand up and defend it there will be no nation. This does not always mean military actions it also includes global economic stabilities and global partners that are willing to back a nation up during all phases good or bad. Is the world stage losing faith in American acts? Some may argue all you need to do is look at the way America uses the military to force our ways on other countries (i.e. Iraq or Korean War), or the way we are currently dealing with our own fiscal issues. America is one of the biggest nations in the world and we do have a large presence in the world community. One of the best examples of our presence would be that of our military. The Pentagon currently owns or rents 702 overseas bases in about 130 countries and has another 6,000 bases in the United States and its territories (Johnson). Even with this massive presence overseas it doesnt make us immune. The greatest example would be 9-11 and the flack we caught when invading Iraq. I remember after 9-11 happened may were in arms for getting even with the individuals that did this to America, but when President Bush decided to invade Iraq some attitude changed. People both globally and here at home began having doubt in the American go vernment. The American economy also has caused doubts not only across the nation but also world, a perfect example would be the credit downgrade that America received. [The] credit agency Standard Poors lowered the nations AAA rating for the first time since granting it in 1917à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦one notch to AA-plus (Foxnews). This credit rating drop changed many views on America and made many wonder what would the government do to fix the issue. Throughout the 20th century America has found itself in several challenges to overcome, both at home and overseas. Two examples of how America has strong backing would be during the Great Depression and World War II. One of the biggest challenges it had to overcome was the Great Depression, it was an easy time for Americans to give up, but they didnt. The government had to step in and help restart the economy and it took several years to bounce back. Without handwork and strong support from the people, even though struggles, America may not have been able to recover. Another great challenge that America had to endure was World War II. Once Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, America had to face a great war on two different fronts, the Pacific and European wars. As the war progressed women had to replace men, who went to war, in factories. The American people were also called to help support the war by selling war bonds to raise money for war efforts. This along with rationing of precious go ods such as gas, tires, sugar, coffee, meat, butter, alcohol (Ayers 687) showed support from the American people. A great example of America not having support from home or overseas would be the Iraq War. After 9-11, President Bush was able to get the Patriot Act passed which gave broad powers to combat terrorism (Ayers 874). The President saw a threat in Iraq and wanted to make sure that the American people were going to be safe. After not receiving very little support from the United Nations in the decision to attack, he decided to take action. After the initial shock and awe the resentment began to grow from within the United States and around the world. Looking back on the 20th century and the present day, I do believe that America still has a strong presence in the world. One of Americas biggest strengths is the military. As stated earlier we have strong overseas presence both on land and sea. We have numerous bases overseas, in Japan and Europe, and with the greatest Navy in the world we can be off a countrys coastline within a few days ready to drop bombs if needed. Our economy, even with the tough times we are going though, still is able to produce more goods and services than most of the world. Prices throughout the world still use the U.S. dollar as the standard currency to base prices on. Most countries, including the ones that despise Americans, either follow our culture or try to copy what we are doing. They follow our music, movies, celebrities, and even wanting our freedoms. Though my experiences of traveling the world, when I was in the military, no matter what culture you find yourself in there is some type of American influence that can be found. This is why I believe that American still hold a strong stance in the world community. In my personal opinion, I dont think Americans are losing faith in America, I think we (as a whole) are losing faith in the government. The decisions that law makers are currently making to balance the budget has been a fight thats been going on for years. Most of the individuals I talk to feel that instead of trying to fix the problem at hand, the government tries to make due on campaign promises and kick the problem down the road. Several issues such as jobs being sent overseas (to places like China and Korea), the military budget, they fiscal cliff, and entitlements are causing Americans to lose faith in the way the government to trying to control the spending. If we as a country, both government and the civilian population, are unable to control the debt and get ourselves back to a fiscal economy the we will lose our place as an economic power. There are other countries that are building up and are ready to take over as the strongest nation, both economically and militarily, i.e. China. This could take several years to accomplish but if things dont change it could be reality. History shows that if we as American people are willing to stand up for the founding principles that out forefather stated, then the American dream can still survive. If we currently continue down the path we are on we could become a second rate in the world as a whole. Even if this takes place and the world looks at us differently down the road, I still believe that Americans as a whole will not lose faith and will continue to fight for what America stands for.
